Full Shelves, Happy Hearts
Filling the shelves of Rosarito’s libraries
Friends of the Library has supported our five library branches in many ways over the years - starting with physical needs (restoring electricity, roof repair), then moving on to running Saturday and summer reading programs, providing supplies for arts and crafts programs, and purchasing books to supplement the libraries’ book collections.
But it has become increasingly apparent that the book collections are in a state of crisis. Shelves appear full but are stocked with outdated encyclopedias in English, outdated periodicals, and many titles of little interest to local readers. The few popular titles are often in deteriorating condition. How can this be? The plain truth is that the funds have simply not been there to purchase books.
So, we are stepping up to put a substantial budget behind book purchases. We are calling it our “Full Shelves, Happy Hearts” campaign, Estantes Llenos, Corazón Contento in Spanish.
We began our efforts with initial deliveries of new books in April, finding help from many sources. For example, Libreria el Día in Tijuana and publishers in the US sell us titles at discounts of as much as 50%.
But we have barely made a dent. Our October 11 Grand Night of Piano concert is the kickoff event for our Full Shelves fundraising campaign. We will not cease until each library greets visitors with shelves full of appealing books.
