Rosarito Lee and Copa Panchito 2020

The 2019-2020 school year is the seventh year of our program that takes place in public and private schools throughout Rosarito Beach, in which all participants read the same books. Our goal is to make Rosarito Beach the number one city for reading in all of Mexico. Again this year, we have included some schools in nearby areas of Tijuana and Ensenada.

The Rosarito Lee program in the schools this year is called Somos Lectores (We are Readers) and involves volunteer parents reading with the children in some schools, in a variation of Mexico's Espiral program.

This year the selected books (available in both Spanish and English) are
Cajas de carton (The Circuit) and Senderos fronterizos (Breaking Through) by Francisco Jimenez and El Cristal con que se mira (In the Eye of the Beholder) by Alicia Molina. Author Jimenez has visited Rosarito Beach in past years to meet the children personally on visits to libraries and schools. He will visit again this year as will author Molina. They will participate in our 2-day Reading Festival "Read to Flourish" Festival de Lectura: Leer para florecer."

CONTESTS FOR Copa Panchito 2020

SCHOOL LEVEL

OLIMPIADA de LECTURA (READING OLYMPICS): a Jeopardy style/Academic Bowl competition, similar to the Copa Panchito (below), but held within each school, allowing broader participation and serving as a preliminary to the Copa Panchito.

COPA PANCHITO. Each participating school enters a team of three students - this year from 6th grade only - to compete with teams from other participating schools for the Panchito Cup. This is a Jeopardy style/Academic Bowl competition. Students will answer questions from Alicia Molina's book, which will involve not only recall of facts but also "thought" questions. In each preliminary round, losing teams are eliminated and the winners advance to the next stage of the competition. The four finalist schools compete in the Grand Finale at the Reading Festival.

The Gran Campeón school receives the Copa Panchito trophy.

INDIVIDUAL LEVEL

STUDENT COMPOSITIONS AND DRAWINGS - Each participating student is invited to write a composition, with accompanying drawing, about something they learned from the books that relates to their own lives. Each school selects their best letters which are published in an illustrated Anthology. The Bella Prize will go to a student in each school, chosen for qualities of helpfulness, supportiveness and encouragement, a student especially appreciated as a support to the teacher and/or as a great teammate - gracious, supportive, encouraging, always there to help or build up their teammates.
